Queen of Ten Game The queen of 10 came to our classroom today. Shared this super awesome website and game with us. Your students will be coming home with a 5 frame today. This is an awesome tool to help them learn how to compose and decompose the number 5! https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Five-Frame/ **Stuffed Animal on Tuesday** Please send your child to school with a small stuffed animal on Tuesday. This stuffed animal should be able to easily fit in your child's purple tote bag with their lunch box and folder.
What we are learning the week: Word of the week: The Letters of the week: P, X, B, J, E, Z, C Reading: As we wrap up our Learn About the World Unit, readers will practice rereading their books to learn more. Students will practice as they reread noticing the words and rethinking what they think the page might be about. We will transition into our We are Storybook Readers by rereading our “old favorites”. These are books we’ve read over and over again- all we have to do is look at the pictures and then remember how the story goes. Writing: We will be beginning a new unit for writing this week! As students’ stamina grows, the amount that they draw and write on each page should too. This week we will be practicing planning a drawing, sketching it quickly, adding details, and then writing SEVERAL labels. Our writers will learn how planning can help both their pictures and their words make more sense in their stories. As students look back on their work, they might see that they can add more by telling where something is and what’s going on. Adding more is a way we revise our writing and authors, just like Mo Willems, do it too! Students will get to work their spelling muscles and use everything they know to spell the words they want on their page. We are learning that we can try our best to record the sounds we hear- even if it’s not perfect! The tools around the room can help us spell- the name wall, alphabet chart, and snap words. Phonics: Students will continue to work with their name to learn letters, sounds, and expand their writing abilities! Each child will get to know their OWN name by heart by learning the correct formations for each letter and teaching their first letter to a partner. We will practice changing the first sound in words to create rhyming words (ex: bat- rat- cat- mat). As students know the letters and names surrounding them better, we will use our letter knowledge to label anything in their stories using the Name Wall and alphabet charts. Math: In math we will continue to work on decomposing numbers and different ways to make numbers. As a new skill this week, students will begin to work on composing numbers- combining two sets of numbers to make a new number. We will introduce a new game called “Roll and Cover”. Science & Social Studies: Our scientists this week will be exploring their five senses- hearing, sight, taste, touch, and smell. They will participate in various hands on activities to practice using each sense. We will be taste-testing skittles, smelling different scents to guess what it is, and even reaching into mystery bags (without looking) filled with things like cooked spaghetti! Save the Dates!
