What we are learning this week! Words of the week: I Letters of the week: M & F Math: This week students will continue to learn the structure of math workshop. We will practice talking about math using sentence stems to share our thinking, such as “I agree” or “I disagree”. Students will learn the rules and procedures for math rotation days and discuss what it looks like and sounds like to be good mathematicians hard at work. As they are introduced to math partners, students will talk about what a good math partner looks like and practice being one themselves through rotations. They will participate in various math activities around the room to become familiar with the routines, procedures, and talking about math with their group. At the end of the week, students will create a Pete the Cat glyph about themselves to learn more about their classmates. Reading Workshop: This week our readers are going to learn how to respect other readers during our workshop time. We are discussing how hard it is to pay attention to your reading when others are distracting you. Respectful readers read the whole time, stay in one spot, get started right away, and read quietly. We want to be readers that respect and help others grow! Students will be introduced to their reading partner. We will talk about why talking about our reading with others helps us grow! When students are working with their reading partner, they will be working on using a voice level only their partner can hear, speaking only when it is their turn, and looking at each other while they are working. We will continue to build our reading stamina, too! Writing Workshop: This week our writers will write their own stories- just like writers of books. We will use mentor texts, such as Freight by Donald Crews and Creak! Said the Bed by Phyllis Root to study how different authors brainstorm ideas, plan their writing, write, and add details. Students will work on revising and editing their writing to think of how they can add even more detail to their pictures and words. We can’t wait to watch our writing stamina grow and grow! Phonics: We are launching our Phonics Unit 1 this week! We will get to know our newest class member- Mabel! Be sure to ask your child about our new classmate- she is very loved already! We are beginning to learn names. This helps build our class community and introduce each letter and the proper way to form them! We will introduce one letter each day using your child’s very own name. Each child will get to be a STAR and help our class learn more about phonics and letters. Science & Social Studies: As we continue to build a classroom community, students will learn and share how to be a good friend. Through various activities, like writing and class discussions, students will practice being good friends and sharing their ideas in a safe environment.
