Here are some platforms that we will be using, as well as directions for connecting. Seesaw: This is a platform we have been using all year, but I will be using it to send videos. The students can add comments via text, audio, or video recording. In order to create a sense of classroom community, I will be making the comments available for the class to see. If there is a comment or video that is just for me, add a little note that you do not want it shared. If you have not yet connected to our Seesaw community, you will be receiving an email invite.
I-Station: The assignments are personalized by me for areas your child was working on before Spring Break. If you feel the lessons are too hard or easy, please let me know, and I can change them up. If they have completed all of the assignments, there are other free choice activities they can work on for the week. If you have not used I-Station at home yet, you will go to the I-Station website and download it. Search for Hazel S. Pattison when it asks for the school code. If you need your child's login information, please let me know. Dreambox: This program automatically offers individualized instruction for your child based on answers they get correct or miss. It's important that you do not give them the answers or do it for them, because it will adjust the activities to a level that is too hard for them. The students can press the question at the top to hear directions. The app will provide videos and hints to help your child work through areas that they need assistance. This program can be downloaded as an app (IOS only) or accessed on the computer. You may also log in as a parent by following the directions that were sent out in the curriculum email from the district on Friday or by using the directions in the parent letter found here: https://tinyurl.com/PattisonDreamBox . (I can help guide you through this process if you need help). When you are logged on as a parent, you will be able to track their progress, as well as see areas where they might be stuck. The app will provide videos to show your child that helps them work through those areas. I can see how many lessons your child has completed at home, as well as areas they might be struggling. I will communicate with you via email if I think they might be stuck. This program can be downloaded as an app, or accessed on the computer. Our school code is: 2tt4/myt4 . From there your student should be able to enter their username and password (the purple card taped to the inside of their purple folder). Please let me know if you need this login information or email our math coach, Pennylane Lara for login information at [email protected]. Raz-Kids: The current reading level is set to your where your child was reading before Spring Break. If the books and quizzes are too easy for them, please let me know, and I will adjust. I can monitor which comprehension questions they are missing on the quizzes and can let you know what types of questions to ask while they are reading to make sure they are truly understanding what they're reading. Decoding text is an important part of reading, but students also need to understand what they're reading on a deeper level before moving on to more meaty content. My Katy Cloud: Google "My Katy Cloud," and it will pop up. Their username and password are on the white card taped inside their purple folder. If you need this information, let me know and I will get it to you. From here, your child can access Canvas, BrainPop, DreamBox, Discovery Education, Tumblebooks, Nat Geo Kids, and more. You can find them by either clicking on the magnifier glass and searching for what you are looking for or click on the "Elementary" tab at the bottom of the page. The students are familiar with most of the content on My Katy Cloud since we use it in our classroom often. Go Noodle: This is another great resource for physical activity that they students love! https://family.gonoodle.com/ **Additionally, we have also done Cosmic Kids Yoga! They have a free YouTube channel.
--No School --Dear Katy ISD Parents, Community and Staff,
Over the past few weeks, Katy ISD has been actively monitoring the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation and has remained in constant contact with health officials who have been providing guidance and recommendations. As you know, the number of confirmed cases of individuals infected with the virus throughout the Houston greater area has continued to increase within the past week. Because the safety of our students, staff, and families is a top priority, we have decided to act out of an abundance of caution to protect everyone’s health and wellbeing by postponing the return from spring break by at least one week. In addition, all campus events, field trips, student trips and UIL practices and competitions are postponed beginning Friday March 13, 2020 and throughout the closure. We will keep our community informed on whether the temporary closure will need to extend beyond March 22. Currently, we are reviewing and considering options for resuming instruction via online virtual learning should the District need to extend the closure. Information will be shared about this soon. The temporary closure will allow the District, state and local health officials to better evaluate the extent of COVID-19 spread within our community and ensure those needing to self-quarantine may do so prior to returning to school. Information concerning COVID-19 and the impact in the Houston greater area is rapidly evolving. As such, Katy ISD will continue to provide updated information to our students, staff and families throughout the week. We ask our community to continue to follow the guidance from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention regarding safety practices to inhibit the spread of COVID-19. We know parents may also be concerned about instruction, attendance and exemptions during the extended break. Information about these items will be available on the Katy ISD Health Update web page within the coming week. Should you have any questions or concerns related to this matter, please feel free to email the District at [email protected]. Thank you for your continued support as we work together to protect the health and safety of our students and community. Katy ISD Reminders: March Literacy Bags These will go home this week. They will be due on Friday March 27th. Please make sure to complete the choice board options each week. Friday March 6th ----Kindergarten Rodeo Please send your child to school in their best rodeo gear! March 9 - 13th-- Spring Break Enjoy the beautiful spring weather! There is no school this week! :) Kinder (2020-2021) Round-up Thursday, March 19th , we will be rounding up our next year’s NEW kindergartners (2020-2021) from 6-7 P.M. What we are learning this week! Words of the week: all, ball, had, will Reading: This week readers will be working on making playdates! That’s right, playdates aren’t just for after school, you can make playdates with your reading clubs, too! We will be learning different activities to do during each playdate to share our reading with our club members. Some options: read aloud, snap word hunt, alphabet pop it!, guess the feeling, and guess what’s next! Readers will also work on acting out the story in their head. Each time you read, you can act out the story… just like a movie! Our readers are learning so many ways to read more and share their reading with others this week! Writing: Our writers are continuing to write persuasive writing this week! We will be using the Mentor Text, I Wanna Iguana by Karen Orloff. As persuasive writers, we see a problem, think about how we can solve it, and then write! Writers use words to help make the world better! In order to convince our readers, we use LOTS of reasons! The more reasons we use, the more convincing we are. Phonics: Playing with letters and sounds sure is fun! This week we are working on activating word-part power to write longer words. We don’t just spell new words letter by letter, we can sound out the word part by part. We will be learning new snap words- all, ball, had, and will. From these words we can learn more and more word parts to recognize and sound out in words. For example we might want to write the word small--- when we know the blend sm and the word all, we know all the parts! Snap words are not just for us to recognize in a snap… they can help us add words to our writing, too! Math: This week we will be reviewing addition and subtraction. Students will be working to solve both types of word problems, deciding if they need to add or subtract. Subtraction: “Take away” “less” “difference” Addition: “More”, “add”, “plus”, “altogether” Some problems to practice at home: Read the problem aloud to your student. Ask them if you are adding or subtracting. Have the student choose a way to solve the problem! (manipulatives, number line, draw a picture, number sentence, etc) *Sarah has 9 pieces of candy. She eats 6 of them. How many does Sarah have now? How do you know? *Lucas has 4 cards. His mom gave him 4 more. How many cards does he have? How do you know? *There were 7 flowers in the grass. Will picked 3 of them. How many flowers are left? *Erin has 6 m and ms. Kassandra gave her 3 more. How many m and ms does Erin have altogether? *Brainstorm your own! Mathematician Corner: “Guess My Number!” How to Play: Player 1-Think of a number in your head… Use the words 1 more and 1 less to describe your number. Player 2- use the clues to guess the number. Switch roles! EX: 1- “I’m thinking of a number that is 1 more than 12 and 1 less than 14… What’s my number?” 2- “13!”

Reading: Our Avid Readers are continuing to build their love for reading and their stamina this week. Students will brainstorm ways that they can keep themselves from getting distracted as they read. How can you help yourself read more?
Avid Readers are always looking for ways to grow. They can set goals for themselves. Our readers will be looking back at the Super Readers Anchor Chart from the previous unit to set goals and ways to grow now! Writing: Students will continue to write persuasive writing using their own opinions. Remember that opinions are personal and don’t have to be the same as the person next to you. We will do various writing prompts and activities to practice using opinion words and phrases to show our personal views. We can use opinion words like:
Some opinion books to read at home: Don’t Feed the Bear by Kathleen Doherty The Big Bed by Bunmi Laditan Karen Orloff--I Wanna Iguana and I Wanna New Room Have I Got a Book for You by Melanie Watt Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type by Doreen Cronin Corduroy Writes a Letter by Alison Inches A Pig Parade Is a Terrible Idea by Michael Ian Black Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems The Perfect Pet by Margie Palatini Can I Be Your Dog? by Troy Cummings What Can a Citizen Do? by Dave Eggers Phonics: We know so much about Phonics and now we get to play with it! Students will be working on deepening their understanding of blends in the context of poetry. It isn’t enough to simply know blends, we also have to think “what would make sense here?” This is an awesome skill to grow our comprehension and our ability to check our understanding of what we read. To grow our writing, we will be working on hearing all the sounds in each word and recording them onto the page. This week we will launch a new bend in Phonics- we will get to create “magic spells!” Students will work to hear ALL the sounds in the “magic words” they create to add to their writing! Math: This week we will be reviewing addition and subtraction. Students will be working to solve both types of word problems, deciding if they need to add or subtract. Some problems to practice at home: Read the problem aloud to your student. Words of the week: play, say, day, for Reading: We are wrapping up our Super Powers unit this week! We will begin the week by learning and practicing how to retell stories. We first look back at the cover and say the title. After that, we say what happened across the pages- being sure to include WHO, WHERE, and WHAT happened… IN ORDER! Rereading our stories and book talks help us bring our story to life and share all we are learning. We can begin our books talks with sentence stems like… “I think…”, “I noticed…”, or “I wonder…” Readers can also open up discussion with others by asking “What do you think?” or “What do you think of that?” We will be using all our powers to celebrate our growth this week! Writing: Our How To Unit is coming to a close this week! We are learning that How To books make great gifts and can be written with someone in mind. We can write our books for and dedicate them to someone who needs to be taught what we are teaching. As we wrap up this unit, we will go back to the basics and remember that how to books always:
Math: We are moving into subtraction this week! Subtraction is when something is taken away. We will be working on solving story problems and showing different ways to solve our subtraction problems. We can use our fingers, a picture, counters, number lines, and count backwards. KEY WORD: “take away”
Science / Social Studies: This week we will be doing multiple activities with a Valentine’s Day theme. We will be experimenting with sinking and floating, making crafts for those we love, and celebrating on Friday! SAVE THE DATE: Valentine's Day Classroom Party Friday February 14th from 8:45 - 9:45 (in your child's classroom) ** See flyer for more information**
February Literacy Bags-- Due Feb. 28th Make sure to complete at least 2 items each week. When turning literacy bags back in, please place all materials back inside the bag & return the bag back to school.
What we are learning this week! Words of the week: play, say, day Reading: We are learning so many tips and tricks to make our reading even stronger. This week we are working on monitoring our reading and checking, “Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?” If you notice that your reader is having trouble checking their reading, you could prompt them to check by saying “You said _____________. Does that make sense? Let’s look back at the words and solve it together.” Our readers will work on strengthening their snap word power, too. In our books we are noticing that there is less of a pattern that we can rely on. Our snap word power, looking at the WHOLE picture, and predicting will help us continue to grow! ***THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE: Review all snap words- check out Mabel’s Weekly Extension! Writing: Our writers are constantly trying to fix and clarify their how to books. This week is no exception! We will be working on adding comparisons to explain each step better, adding introductions and conclusions, and using the books we read and learn from throughout the day to write new how to books. As we add more to our toolboxes, we can’t forget how to keep our writing easy to read.
Math: We are entering into a new unit- addition! This week we will be learning that a number has two parts and we can add those parts together to make a whole. We will be working on solving word problems such as “Last week I was out for a run, and I saw 3 dogs. When I turned onto another street, I saw 3 more dogs. How many dogs did I see altogether?” Practice solving word problems at home with your child! Work on solving each problem in more than one way. We can solve addition problems with a picture, our fingers, and counters/manipulatives! Science / Social Studies: This week we are learning about dental health! A special guest will be visiting us to help us learn how to better care for our teeth. Here’s a fun song to make teeth brushing fun! Congratulations! We have made it 100 days in Kindergarten! Thank you for helping us celebrate them! Digital Citizenship New Library Bags This week: Monday -Send a rock in a ZIPLOC sandwich baggie Tuesday- Dress Tacky for Tacky Tuesday Friday- Wear your PJs to celebrate Groundhog Day What we are learning this week! Words of the week: on, up, fun, get Reading: This week we will be working on looking at more than just the first sound in a word to solve tricky words. We will be learning about blends and digraphs, reading through to the end of the word, and using our snap words to help anchor our reading in a “snap”. Solving tricky words can be scary, but we have all the powers and tools we need to keep getting better and better! Writing: Our writers are growing and this week we will be working to fine tune our how to writing! Writers notice what Mentor Authors do in their books and try to add these skills to their own. We will be looking at how our Mentor Author add not just bold words, but all caps, too. In order to reach our readers, we need to speak to them. One way we do this is by using the word “you” in our writing. Readers also need clear directions, so our challenge as writers is to the find the exact words we need to teach our readers. Ex: when we are talking about kicking a soccer ball, we don’t just say “Go up to the ball and touch it.” NO! That doesn’t help. Instead we could say “Put the ball next to your foot. Put the ball next to the inside of your foot.” Our exact language helps readers know exactly how to do the task. Writers help their reader by adding warnings and tips to their writing. We will be working on “acting out” and thinking through each step in our story to think “What could go wrong?” and then add that advice. Phonics: This week we will continue to grow our vowel power! Sometimes it’s hard to tell the short o, u, and somtimes e apart. We listen really closely and record the vowel we hear. This week we will work on two ways to help us distinguish between vowels. We already know robot talk helps us really listen closely for each vowel sound. Another way we can tell the difference is by the way the sound feels in our throat and mouth. We will explore the way the vowels feel in our throats and mouths so that we don’t just listen for the vowel but feel it, too! Our snap words are awesome tools to help our vowel power grow! We will work with the words on, up, fun, and get to listen for the vowel we hear then turn that word into a snap word. These snap words will always help us remember different vowels have different sounds and feelings in our mouths. Math: We will be wrapping up our teen numbers unit this week with the numbers 17-20. We are learning that teen numbers are a group of 10 and _________ extra ones. Practice at home: Draw a double tens frame (see below). Ask your child to make you a teen number (11-19) using manipulatives. Ask them group the objects by 10 and some more. Make sure to practice automaticity with tens frames. We are growing in being able to automatically know that if a tens frame is full, that means there are 10 there… so we count on! Science & Social Studies: This week we are studying rocks! We will use the rocks each child brings from home to study, learn, and write about physical properties. We will be looking at size, shape, color, luster, and texture.
Tickets are LIVE! Check out the PTA website for information about this exciting event! https://www.pattisonpta.org/pattison-derby-2019 Save the Dates: Monday January 20th-- No School Friday Tuesday January 21--- Hungry Howie's Spirit Night FRIDAY January 24th-- 100th Day of school! ---Dress like you are 100 years old! Friday Jan. 24 from 6-8pm---Daddy & Daughter Dance! HOMEWORK: SEND A ROCK IN A BAGGIE MONDAY JAN. 27th What we are learning this week! Words of the week: Keep Working on snap words at home! Reading:As our books get harder, the words do, too! We will learn this week that one of our most important powers is one we already have… Letters and sounds! This helps us read the words on the page and solve unknown words in our books. When we come to a hard words we can use the beginning of the word and then think “What word could this be?” Our sound power is going to grow in new ways!
Phonics: This week we will wrap up our focus on short a and i in words and color in our shields! We now know short a and i so well that we can hear it so clearly in our reading and writing! We will begin to work with short e, o, and u.These vowels can be tricky to hear the difference so we say the word slow, really listening for the medial/ vowel sound, then record what we hear! Math: This week we are launching into a new numeracy unit! We will be focusing on the teen numbers 15-19.
Science & Social Studies: This week we will be learning all about important people and symbols to our great state- Texas! A fun book to read with your child this week is The Legend of the Bluebonnet by Tomie DePaola. We will be learning about Stephen F. Austin, the bluebonnet, and other important aspects of Texas History.
Tickets go LIVE this week! Check out the PTA website for information about this exciting event! www.pattisonpta.org/ Legacy Parent Academy On Wednesday, January 15, 2020, Katy ISD invites parents, students and community members to learn more about the impact of social media and how to understand, monitor and interact with this ever present force in a positive and productive manner. The event will take place at Legacy Stadium, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. in rooms ABC. LPA educational sessions are free, open to the public, and specifically designed to provide practical strategies to support students. Sessions taking place throughout the school year will include experts on a variety of topics. If you missed a session, you can access this year and last year’s videos on our Legacy Parent Academy website. What we are learning this week! Words of the week: am, did Reading: As our reading muscles grow we have more power to solve even trickier books! The patterns in our books are getting harder but we have all the skills we need to solve tricky patterns. Readers can expect that there will be parts of our stories where the pattern breaks or changes. We can call on our superpowers to help us read those parts well. Another skill we are growing is monitoring our reading. Just because we solved a word using the pictures and the first letter doesn’t mean we are done. Readers have to check their reading for meaning and structure as they read. If their reading doesn’t match or make sense then it is their responsibility to fix it up. We can ask “Does it make sense?” “Does it sound right?” to monitor as we read. Writing: Writers write all different styles of writing but each time they sit to write, no matter what they are writing, they remember the skills they have in their back pocket and use them! When we write how to books, we are not forgetting that we can plan what to write by touching and telling across the pages. While we write, we are learning that writers reread their writing as they go and make changes throughout the writing process. Revising and editing is done as you write…it’s not just for when you are done! Some ways we are working on making our writing better this week is by:
Phonics: Our vowel power is continuing to grow! All words have a vowel and as writers it is our duty to make sure that every word we write has at least one vowel. We will be checking Mabel’s writing to edit and revise for vowels and then using our writing to make sure we activate our vowel power in each word. We will begin to focus on isolating vowel sounds in the middle of words. This is a tricky skill that requires lots of practice! This week we will focus on the short a and short i sounds in a variety of ways. This week we will be learning and reviewing how, you, am and did. Be sure to work on these words at home! Math: This week we are launching into a new numeracy unit! We will be focusing on the teen numbers 11-14.
Science & Social Studies: This week we will be learning about motion and how things move. Students will be discussing the direction and way things move in the world around them. Some words to describe motion:
No School Monday January 6th! Enjoy the winter break with your friends and your family! May you be surrounded by love and laughter. Happy Holidays! What we are learning this week! Words of the week: how, you Reading: This week in reading we will be launching our new reading unit! As our books get bigger and harder, we have to use everything we know to tackle tricky parts. Students will review their powers and gain more in this unit. A tool we will be using is figuring out the pattern. When we know the pattern to a book, it can help us read our books. ACTIVATE PATTERN POWER!!!
Phonics: This week we will begin with reviewing word parts and digraphs before launching into our new unit: VOWEL POWER! In this unit, students will be diving deeper into the different vowels and using their shields to help their power grow stronger. We are beginning to focus on the medial sounds in words now. As we launch a new unit students will be learning that each and every word has a vowel and that these letters are SUPER important in making words and reading them. Review:
*Check out these vowel videos to practice the sounds at home:
Math: This week we will continue with graphing. Students will learn about different types of graphs- Tally Graphs, T-charts, Bar Graphs, and Pie Charts. Students will be graphing based on different questions each day. Tally Graph: Try graphing the weather this week with your student: Here’s a video about making tally marks! T-Chart : Create a t-chart collecting about the question: Which fruit do you like better: apples or bananas? Make apples and bananas the column headers, draw circles for each person surveyed under the correct column, and count the total at the end. Survey your family and see which fruit is the most liked in your household!
Pie Chart: Try out this flower pie chart graph! Science & Social Studies: This week students will be learning about a resolution. Each student will make their own New Year’s Resolution and work on planning out how to achieve their goal. Gingerbread Parties are THIS WEDNESDAY!! *The KINDERGARTEN Gingerbread Party is this WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18th, from 2:30-3:20 pm. EX: (set out in, and, girl, me, at) P1: Clue 1: “I spy with my little eyes a word that has 2 letters.” P1: Clue 2: “This word rhymes with fin.” P2: “in!” Reading: Super Readers just keep working harder and harder to get better and better at reading! We are working on bringing our books to life. This week students will work on matching their voice to the feelings in the stories they are reading. We can do this by studying the pictures and noticing the punctuation on each page. Super Readers will learn how to talk about the books they read. We have book talk power! Readers use the title, picture on the cover, and think about how the pages go together BEFORE they even read the story with someone else. Book talks can get others excited about reading stories… but don’t give away the ending! AFTER we read, readers retell what happened in the story before moving on to another story. We can say “This book is called…and on every page... “ and then fill in the ending. These are skills that help us bring our books to life and share them with others. Try practicing reading with feeling, giving a book talk, and retelling the stories you read at home, too! Writing: This week students will be working on adding even more to their “fancy pattern books” by connecting ideas and making longer sentences. The word “and” can be used to connect two ideas (EX: I like apples and oranges.) The word “because” can be used to share your thinking or feelings as a writer (EX: I love my mom because she is kind.) Students will also be working on adding a new pattern to their books… a see-saw pattern! This is a pattern that switches off on each page. (EX:
Phonics: Students are growing their word part power nice and strong as we enter into the final bend of our unit! We will continue to work with word parts but this time looking at The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Suess to discuss that words that sound the same at the end are usually spelled the same, too! On Tuesday, students will bring in a small stuffed animal to teach all they know about word parts. We will then take it back to the beginning by studying the alphabet chart. However, this time we aren’t just looking for letters and sounds… we are searching for word parts! We can use the word parts we know and find on our chart to help us write other words. Digraphs are also making their debut this week! Digraphs are two consonants that work together to make a single sound. We will be working with sh, th, and ch. Math: Mathmaticians will work to generate sets that are more than, less than, and equal to numbers. Some ways to work at home:
Science & Social Studies: Students will learn about the different ways people celebrate the holiday season! We will focus on Hannakuh, Kwanzaa, and Christmas. Students will share how their family celebrates the holidays!
Gingerbread House Decorating Parties are Coming Soon... Mark your calendar now for the upcoming Kindergarten party When: December 18, 2019 from 2:30 pm - 3:20 pm Who: Kindergartners and parents (Parents may attend -- maximum of 2 adults per child and NO SIBLINGS) What we are learning this week! Words of the week: got, went, was, she Reading: This week we will be putting all our powers together to make our reading sound even stronger! Readers will work on smoothing out their voices. One way that readers read faster and smoother is to know the pattern in our books. We can sing the words that are the same on every page and work really hard to figure out what words change. Sometimes our books have tricky patterns. We can work extra hard to think “What is the pattern here? What is the same on every page? What is different?” Punctuation can also help us figure out how to read. We will work with the poem “Where Is Thumbkin?” to work on noticing the punctuation in sentences and changing our voices accordingly. Work with this poem to notice snap words and how to read each sentence according to the punctuation at the end! Where Is Thumbkin? Where is Thumbkin? Where is Thumbkin? Here I am! Here I am! How are you today, sir? Very well, I thank you. Run away. Run away.
Phonics: We are continuing to strengthen our word part power this week! Students will work within texts to find words containing the word parts an, at, in, and it. They will use these teeny tiny magical words to help them write sentences using the snap words they already know! Students will begin working with new word parts- they aren’t snap words, but they are teeny tiny magical word parts! We will work with -ap, -ot, ip, and op to make lots and lots of words. Students will work with their word part lassos to lasso up the word parts in each word. Math: This week students will be working on forwards and backwards number counting. When practicing, challenge your student to start at different numbers. We are working on counting to and from 10. Example: “Can you count from 6 to 10?” “Start at 8 and count to 0.” Continue to review composing and decomposing numbers 6-10. Don’t forget to ask your student to make the whole in a different way. Example: Parent: “I have 4 red lollipops and 5 purple lollipops. How many do I have altogether.” Student: Shows 4 and 5 using manipulatives. “4 and 5 is the same as 9.” Parent: “Great! Can you show me 9 using a different combination?” Student: Shows 9 using manipulatives in a different way. “6 and 3 is the same as 9.” *Check out the number bond videos for continued practice!*

Writing: Students will be returning to pattern books this week! Pattern books have a repeating phrase throughout all the pages (I like the _____; I see a _______; My mom is _________, etc) We can build these phrases using our snap words. Fancy pattern books sometimes add a surprise ending on the last page and change the pattern! Work with your student and their snap word cards to build pattern sentences as you write stories at home. Students will learn about adjectives and how these add detail to our pattern stories.
Mabel's Weekly Extension... Math: Students will continue to study 3D shapes through participating in rotations. Try finding 3D shapes in the world around you this week! Science & Social Studies: Students will be preparing for our Friendship Celebration on Friday and sharing their family traditions for Thanksgiving. We will also be heading back to the Science Lab for our Pumpkin Lab! Students will observe and describe the physical properties of pumpkins with their lab groups.

In the student’s Tuesday folder they will be bringing home a personalized order. Each student has their own code. You are also able to look up their art work through the website. www.ArtToRemember.com * Art to Remember keepsakes are the perfect gifts for any occasion! The deadline for ordering is November 18, 2019. What we are learning this week! Words of the week: ran, sat, sit *Tip for practicing names: This week, work with your child on forming all the letters in their name correctly (make sure only the first letter in their first and last name is capitalized!). Here’s an awesome website to create customized tracing sheets! You can stick one page in a sheet protector and use expo markers to practice over and over again! https://www.createprintables.com/name_tracing_worksheet.php Reading: This week in reading we will be continuing to strengthen our reading superpowers! Working with partners helps make our reading stronger. Partners can help us practice pointing to words and check that each word only gets one point. As super readers we won’t get defeated when we encounter trouble during reading time. Instead, we can call on all the powers we already have and picture power, too! Picture power helps us study the picture then check the first letters and context on the page to make sure our words are right. As students learn more and more snap words, we have to make sure we make our snap word power strong by working with our snap words over and over again to recognize them in a… well, a snap! Activate all your powers super readers!
Writing: This week as we continue to explore how to make our writing ready for readers, we will explore how other authors write! We can look closely at author’s we love and see what they did in their writing. Than we can think “What did this writer do that I could try?” We will be using their new technique to add even more to our stories! As we begin to wrap up this unit, we will be reviewing how to prepare our piece for “publishing” and talking about the importance of an ending. We can end our writing with feeling just like Mem Fox did in Koala Lou!
Math: This week we will begin learning about 3D shapes! We will take a day to study each shape and create an interactive word wall. We will be looking at their faces, edges, and vertices. Students will also be looking at the shapes to see if they slide, stack, and/or roll! 3D shapes: cube, cylinder, cone, sphere Vocabulary: Face: a flat surface on a 3D shape Edge: a place where faces meet Vertices: a place where 2 edges meet to form a point Don’t forget: 3D SHAPES ARE FAT, NOT FLAT! Be on the lookout for 3D shapes all around you!
Science & Social Studies: November 11th we celebrate and honor our veterans! We will be studying what it means to be a veteran and characteristics that describe them. Students will be sharing and discussing fall traditions by comparing long ago to present. Students will share the fall traditions they practice today and look back in history to see how they are the same and different. Homework: **NEW Monthly Literacy Bags!** Coming home on Monday is your child's monthly literacy bag. Inside this bag there is a yellow choice board. Please complete 2 of the activities on the choice board each week. You will bag will be due on Friday November 22nd. **Turkey in Disguise!** This will be coming home in your child's purple folder on Tueday November 5th. The turkey is due on Monday November 11th! What we are learning this week! Words of the week: can, to, do *Tip for practicing names: This week, work with your child on forming all the letters in their name correctly (make sure only the first letter in their first and last name is capitalized!). Here’s an awesome website to create customized tracing sheets! You can stick one page in a sheet protector and use expo markers to practice over and over again! https://www.createprintables.com/name_tracing_worksheet.php Reading: This week our readers will be learning more skills to help strengthen their pointer power! Our super reading is growing stronger by remembering that each word gets one point- even the “krytonite” (long, tricky) words. Snap words can serve as an anchor to keep us on track while reading as we make sure that the word coming out of our mouth matches the word on the page. Also, we can use the first letter of the word to make sure we are matching our reading to the words.
Writing: This week in writing we will continue working on making our writing the best it can be for our readers! Our writers will work on using a vowel chart to help them figure out the sounds in the middle of each word. We will be reminding ourselves that every word has a vowel… and big words have a vowel in every syllable! As students continue to grow in their writing skills we will move away from relying solely on word wall words to tell stories and work on using our storyteller voice! Writers will be using a new editing tool to add on to their writing this week. We will be practicing searching our mental and drawn pictures to add even more to our stories. As writers search our memory and what we already have on the page, they begin to remember even more happened and add it in! Phonics: We will be using our reading superpowers in phonics! Readers read all day, in every subject, and our superpowers can help us all day, too! We will be using our pointer power to not only read, but to help us write sentences. We can touch the page for each word and help ourselves track our writing as we reread to add even more. We already know how to use snap words when we write sentences and we can write those...well, in a snap! Writers also add other words into their sentences and sound out all the sounds they hear. This takes courage. Our writers will work on their bravery as they say and write each and every sound in long words, too! Math: This week our mathematicians will continue working with part-part-whole and decomposing numbers. Continue to work with your student at home on part-part-whole problems as well as composing and decomposing numbers 6-10. *Missing part: There were 8 lollipops. 6 were grape and the rest were cherry. How many lollipops were cherry? *Missing whole: There were 6 grape lollipops and 2 cherry lollipops. How many did I have altogether? Be sure to check out these number bond videos, part-part-whole explanation, and games!
Science & Social Studies: This week we are learning all about maps! Maps help us learn about places and get to the places we need to go. We will look at maps of places we love, such as Typhoon Texas and Katy Mills Mall, to learn how to navigate a map with words like next to, close, far, etc. We will also be looking at maps to learn about where we are located on maps. We will be using vocabulary such as city, state, country, continent, and planet.
November Dates: Dates: Wednesday the 6th Raising Canes Spirit Night Tuesday the 12th Mother Son Game Night Tuesday the 19th Open House- (Open House 5:30-6:30-----Food Trucks 5:30-8:00) 11/25 - 11/29 Thanksgiving Break What we are learning this week! Words of the week: friend, girl, boy Reading: This week we will begin book shopping and a new reading unit! Students will learn all about how to pick just right books for them! Independent reading time will no longer be from tubs but rather from their very own book bags. We will also be beginning our Super Powers Reading Unit! This unit is filled with tools and tricks to help each student read stories. Students will work on pointer power all week. Pointer power and Reread power help us keep on track as we read. We will work on giving each word one point, rereading when we get off track, and not having any extra words left over on the page or coming from our mouths when we have pointed to each word. As you read together at home, ask your student to show you their pointer power!
Writing: Writers will be working on using all they know to write procedural texts! We will use our writing time to reinforce the procedures for book shopping through interactive class writing. We will also be working on writing about the book Skeleton Hiccups by Margery Cuyler for this festive week! As we write we will continue to work on adding more sounds, sentence structure, and spelling snap words correctly! Phonics: This week in Phonics we will be working with snap words and preparing for Word School! Students will work with snap words in different fonts to recognize our snap words anywhere we see them. Word School is our unit’s celebration and we are preparing hard this week by inviting our animals to join us, making lesson plans, and finally teaching our animals all the words we know! Don’t forget to bring a stuffed animal on Friday! Math: In math students will begin to learn about part, part, whole! Students will work with various word problems, activities, and games to work on their fluency. We will be using number bonds to practice. Some example problems:
Some games you can play: *I have___ but I want ____. How many do I need? (I have 6 but I want 10. How many do I need? (4) *Bears in a Cave *Shake and Spill
Science & Social Studies: This week we will continue to learn about energy! We will focus on light and sound energy. We will do experiments and add to our interactive word wall to share all we are learning about light and sound! Light is a form of energy detected by our sight. Some examples are the sun and lights. Sound is a form of energy detected by our hearing. Some examples are music and our voices. Reminders: Red Ribbon Week Monday: Pattison “votes” to be drug free- wear RED! Tuesday: Sock it to drugs! Wear crazy socks! Wednesday: The future is too bright for drugs! Wear sunglasses! Thursday: Hats off to a drug free life! Wear a hat! Friday: Be a HERO! Say no to drugs. Wear a superhero shirt! Field Day Field Day is Tuesday, October 29th from 12:45 - 3:15. If you would like to volunteer at field day, please use the sign-up link below: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0848a9aa2cab9-pattison2 For more information use the Pattison PE Weebly- www.pattisonpe.weebly.com What we are learning this week! Words of the week: this, is, here, house, park, in, an, it Reading: This week in reading we are sharing our reading! We will be working on sharing our thinking with our partner during reading time. Partners are great people to share our thoughts with, what we like, and what we wonder in our stories. We don’t just say “This is funny” or “That’s cool”. We always explain why we think it’s funny or cool. We can say “This part was funny because… “ or “This page was cool because…” We can also ask questions with our partner why we read. We can say “How do you think he feels right now?” or “What do you think will happen next?” Sharing our reading helps us teach others and keeps us thinking all day long! Writing: This week in writing will be all about editing! We will work on adding sounds, snap words, sentences, capital letters, punctuation, and so much more. We are making our writing ready for readers to read this week!
Math: This week we will be focusing on parts, whole, and composing. We will be working with the numbers 6-10 to compose these numbers in more than one way. We can say what we have made by stating “__(part)____ and _(part)____ is the same as _(whole)____.” We will also be working on solving word problems using math tools (manipulatives, pictures, etc). Just like we can make numbers in so many ways, we can also solve word problems in many different ways! Continue to work on making numbers 5-10 in different ways using 2 types of manipulatives. You can ask “Please make me 6 using 2 color counters.” Make sure your student shares their answer with “____ and ____ is the same as ____” (EX: 4 and 2 is the same as 6).
Science & Social Studies: We will begin our study of energy! This week we are focusing on heat or thermal energy! Thermal energy can be used to cook, comes from the sun, and can even be made when we rub our hands together. We will explore heat/ thermal energy through experiments! Our scientists will be making predictions and then sharing their findings/ conclusions.
What we are learning this week! Words of the week: dad, mom, cat, dog Reading: This week in reading we will be working on adding labels into our stories! Just like in writing, we can add labels into our books to help show readers what’s really important. We can do this by adding sticky notes to our books to label the important parts of pictures using sounds, snap words, and feelings. Readers will work with their partner to record even more sounds. Writing: During writing this week, students will continue to work on adding all they know to each story. We will be adding more sentences using our snap words, letters, and all the sounds we hear. As always, we are working on adding more to our stories each day. Writers will get opportunities to edit their work and reread to make sure they are using all they know each time. Partners will support each other in their writing to help write even more. Two brains are better than one! Phonics: Our word scientists will be teaching their stuffed animals all they know! When we are experts at the alphabet charts we can share our learning. As word scientists we can use the alphabet chart in our writing, too. It can help us figure out the beginning sound or help us add even more sounds to each word. We will be incorporating our phonics studies into writing more and more during this bend! We can’t wait to watch our students connect all they are learning. Math: This week our mathematicians will be working on reading, writing, representing, composing, and decomposing the numbers 9 and 10. Be sure to keep playing math games to build these skills at home! Science & Social Studies: We will be sorting leaves based on physical properties. Students will bring a leaf from home and sort it by color, shape, and size. We will also be participating in our first science lab this week with Mrs. Lara, our math and science coach. Students will be learning all about lab safety!
Reminders: Monday is an early dismissal day! Dismissal will be at 12:30 Katie The Bus is coming on Oct. 22nd. Please be on the look out for a permission slip in the Tuesday Folder. This will be due on Friday Oct. 18th. Homework: We are asking that this week you send a leaf in a baggie with your child to school. We will be observing physical properties of leaves such as color, shape, size, and texture. Thank you! Field Day Field Day is Tuesday, October 29th from 12:45 - 3:15. If you would like to volunteer at field day, pleae use the sign-up link below: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0848a9aa2cab9-pattison2 For more information use the Pattison PE Weebly- www.pattisonpe.weebly.com Nurse Huff Reminders: We have been seeing several confirmed flu cases in Kindergarten. I just wanted to remind everyone of the fever policy. Students must have been fever free (below 100 degrees F or 37.8 degrees Celsius) without the use of fever reducing medications for 24 hours before returning. So if your student has a fever above 100 in the evening they may not return to school the next day even if they do not have a fever in the morning. The flu and other similar viruses may last up to 7 days in some cases but it is important to keep student out until fully recovered for their safety and to keep the virus from spreading. They will have a chance to make up any work missed and the teacher will work with them to reteach any concepts missed. Thank you for your cooperation!! Codi Huff, RN, BSN What we are learning this week! Words of the week: was, and, got
Writing: Writers will be working on adding more than one sentence to each page. Just like our mentor authors, we can ask ourselves “What else could I add?” then use our snap words to make a new sentence. Before we add more, we always reread to make sure we know what we have written about, what has already been said, and what is missing. Rereading is a strategy that writers use often to make sure their story is ready to be read by others! Phonics: This week we will be zooming into the beginning sounds in words. Word Scientists say the word sloooowwwlllyyyy, catch the first sound, and then find the letter that goes with that sound. We will build automaticity with our alphabet charts by studying them more and more!
Science & Social Studies: We will continue to learn about community helpers this week! Community helpers are people that make our community even stronger and function well. We will continue to learn about each community helper and their role in our community. Friday is Junior Achievement Day! We will be learning about financial literacy and our community.

What we are learning this week! Words of the week: me, my, at, look, see Letters of the week: We have officially learned all of our letters! Please continue working on letter recognition and sounds! Reading: This week our readers will continue working on reading all types of storybooks. We will keep working on matching the pictures to the words in our stories. The pictures help us know what the page is about but we can’t stop with the pictures. We will also begin to learn about story elements: characters, problems, solutions, and retelling stories (beginning, middle, and end). Continue making books at home “Old Favorites” by reading them over and over again! Writing: In writing this week we will begin working on writing pattern books. We are learning SO many snap words and we can use these words to create pattern books in our writing! We will use sentences like “I like ____.”, “I can ______.”, “The _____ can.”, etc. There are so many sentences we already know how to write using our snap words! When we begin writing sentences, we will need to learn all the conventions that accompany a sentence. We will be looking at how a sentence starts, ends, and everything in between. We are so excited to watch our writing grow stronger with sentence power added! Phonics: This week we will be beginning a new Phonics Unit! We are becoming word scientists in this unit. In this unit we will be word scientists as we continue to study letters and sounds. Students will be working with the alphabet charts and noticing all the sounds in words. They will get to look at different alphabet charts and notice what is the same and what is different about the charts. As students learn more and more words, watch their reading and writing grow! Math: This week we will be continuing to learn how numbers can be made in all different ways! We will move into the numbers 6 and 7. Please continue to work on “I have ____ but I want _____. How many more do I need?” for the numbers 2-7. Science & Social Studies: We will be learning all about community helpers! Students will get to choose a community helper they would want to be and share why.

What we are learning this week! Words of the week: like Letters of the week: Oo, Hh, Gg, Qq, Yy Reading: We are wrapping up our reading unit this week and will finish on Friday with a celebration of reading! This week we will be working on joining pages together using transition words like “after” and “then”. Students will continue to work on matching their words to the pictures on each page. As they grow in their reading they will be challenged to notice the sounds at the beginning of words, and maybe even throughout the words, to try and read more and more on each page. We can use our name wall, alphabet chart, and snap words to help our reading grow. Continue to read old favorites at home with your child to help build their love for reading and their retelling skills! Some of our favorites at school are The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss, The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Paul Galdone, and any books by Mo Willems. Writing: Our writers are growing SO much! This week we will be looking at different ways that pages can go- “lots of stuff, “one big thing”, or “lift the flap”. We will work on making even longer labels to our writing to help bring things in our stories to life and tell how they feel, smell, look, sound, or even taste. Writers will be challenged to add sentences onto their writing lines. These sentences tell even more than just what the picture and labels can. As we grow, we have to learn how to talk about our writing, too. Each writer will work on discussing what they are making, what they are proud of, and what is tricky for them. We will recruit help from partners and tools around the room to help us continue to grow! Phonics: We are wrapping up our unit this week in Phonics! Our students are growing SO very strong in their letters. This week we will be asking one of our favorite book characters to join our name wall and help us keep learning letters, working with our snap words, and finally celebrating our growth! In order to celebrate learning each and every letter, we will incorporate reading and writing into our celebration and finishing with a letter to Mabel congratulating her on learning her letters, too! When we know our letters and sounds, we look at the world differently- but just because we are done learning the letters doesn’t mean that we forget! Goodness no! We will continue to use these important tools to only keep growing with letters and sounds! Math: We will continue learning about 2D shapes in math. Students will continue to build their knowledge of squares, rectangles, circles, and triangles by participating in math rotations.
